Riches, such. I indulged in an evening of conversation with two relatively new friends, Scott and Jewel, at Serious Coffee in Sidney. I think we were all a little tense at first, wondering if we'd have anything to say to each other, and next thing you know, the baristas were making stagey hand gestures toward the exit. Lovely.
It's on. The first poetry challenge between Nik and me ended today with the exchange of our first work centered on the term I chose, "unlikely dungeon." So with many admonitions that mine was "really only a rough draft, please don't puke," etc., I handed my hand-scrawled bit of paper over. Nik's poem was about a forgotten woman in a nursing home, and was heart-searing. Mine was about genetic predestination, which comes from sticking my nose into that masterwork of Richard Dawkins, "The Selfish Gene."
Nik's in charge of this week's challenge, which she announced early in the afternoon. We are to take a bit out of a favourite poem by another poet, and use that to inspire our next work. But to choose a favourite poem! That's like choosing, oh, a favourite breath. There are so dang many.
